TESTIMONIALS from our 2022 JSHS Nationals attendees
I honestly didn’t know what I was getting into when I did JSHS in 2021 as a poster presenter. I didn’t realize the gravity of the potential opportunities, the impact research science has, and the incredible people that would be brought into my life. I am in disbelief that my project led me all the way to NJSHS 2022 as an oral presenter. I am overwhelmed by my love of this event at both the regional and national level. As someone whose main passion isn’t STEM, and whose project leaned more on the humanities side, I found ways how STEM is critical to valuable research and can be applicable in every project. In my project, I was able to examine the objectives behind commercial volunteer trips or voluntourism and uncover the obscured realities behind this seemingly altruistic industry using regression statistics and a grading scale. It was not only fun to do the work for this project but to be able to present it in front of the incredible judges at both events and work with my teachers to develop this idea. It is amazing to be able to dive into a topic of your interest and examine it in a way that hasn’t been seen before. It’s a one of a kind feeling doing your own research! At the national event, I met the best possible people I could’ve and got to travel around Albuquerque with them (much love to my other 2022 DoDEA-Europe delegates and Ms. McCauley, truly the best people). Whether it was going to the Aquarium together, the Nuclear Museum, or playing cards in the evening, the people at this event make it just as much an emotionally rewarding experience as does the actual research. All in all, this is a can’t miss event and I would highly encourage anyone to submit a paper/presentation, because it will truly change your life.

If someone would have told me back in November that in a few months I would be presenting award winning research in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I would have thought they were crazy. That November I had been given an assignment by my AP Physics teacher where she challenged us to devise and solve an original research problem. Unlike many others, my research project did not directly relate to STEM; it came directly from one of my main passions: volleyball. Though I may have seemed out of place at the regional event, this did not stop me from taking first place and securing my spot in the national competition. This may have been the craziest, most confusing surprise of my life. All I really knew about New Mexico was that they were famous for hot air balloons and that Breaking Bad had been filmed there, so I was quite anxious to be in an unfamiliar place with countless unfamiliar faces. Upon arriving at the national event in April, I met up with the rest of my delegation. There were two students from Stuttgart, one from Brussels, and one from Spangdahlem. Despite none of us knowing each other, we were able to quickly connect through the shared experiences of being a military connected kid overseas. The relationships I made with these amazing people quickly diffused my anxiety and made me feel at home, so a special thank you to Anna, Hala, Sam and Olivia. Perhaps the most intriguing part of this whole experience was listening to the research done by the other students in attendance. The information given at this event by my judges and peers provided me with guidance on how to achieve my goals in life, and what it takes to reach them. After listening to several insightful keynote speakers and people in different career fields, we were able to use every second of our free time to the best of our abilities. Thanks to our amazing sponsor, Ms. McCauley, we were able to experience everything from snakes to sharks in our adventures. This experience is one that I will never forget, and cannot be replicated anywhere else. I advise that even if you do not think your project falls under STEM, you should definitely still apply. You never know what state you’ll end up in as a result.

My experience with JSHS has been fantastic. Not only have I grown as a student, pushing my abilities and learning about the research process, but I have met so many motivated, inquisitive individuals who have become friends, mentors, and genuine inspirations. I have done JSHS for two years now, as a regional and national presenter. It started with a research paper for class which I initially had no intention of submitting anywhere, until I heard of JSHS and went for it. I am so glad I did. At the regional event, I met peers and became part of the larger network of student researchers in the Dodea Europe region. For the national event, I traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico for a week-long symposium with students from around the nation and the world. I had a blast. Our fellow presenters were some of the brightest students in the nation, and their work was amazing. I got to know many throughout the event at lab tours, dinners, round tables, presentations, and during our free time. I also loved our Dodea Europe delegation; we had a great time meeting the famous Dr. Love from AFN, visiting local sites and restaurants, and attending the events at the symposium. JSHS has been one of my favorite parts of these last couple of years, and it has opened up so many doors for me. The internships available at the JSHS national event were fantastic and I have even received a research scholarship from the college I am attending next fall. I would highly recommend JSHS to any student interested in new experiences, meeting academically motivated peers, or exploring new opportunities. If you are reading this, you should submit to JSHS; you never know what could happen!

I started my project a few months before JSHS in my AP Research class. JSHS for me at first was a deadline for me to finish my project, a motivation to get it done. Though when I got accepted to present at JSHS regionals I became excited to present and talk about my topic as I hadn’t been able to outside of a small group of friends. The regional event brought my entire research class together more and was fun to participate in as again, I was proud to present my research. I liked speaking with the judges, my personal favorite part in presenting are answering any questions the judges have as oftentime they ask about what interests them. They did in my case due to the straightforward nature of my project. Once I found out I was eligible to attend nationals I was busy with schoolwork and wasn’t all too excited however, when I arrived at the airport and met a fellow NJSHS attendee that I’d be traveling with I realized just how big of an opportunity this is. I got to travel internationally just for presenting a project I had done because I was interested in learning about it. I traveled with Olivia to the states and we became quick friends. While at JSHS I had a blast with my entire delegation touring around Albuquerque.
