TESTIMONIALS from our 2023 JSHS Nationals attendees
My research started through the AP Capstone experience. I took AP Research with Mr. Coapstick and was encouraged to submit to JSHS because I already had a project in the works. I did not use much in the ways of mentorship due to the nature of my project, but I still learned a lot. My project sparked new thought and led to learning new things about code, computers, and people. I will forever be grateful for every frustration I encountered as I had to grow to overcome each. I found that hosting meetings for clubs helped with presenting at JSHS. Speaking is an important skill to have as you will always be your own biggest advocate, oftentimes you have to be.
JSHS provided another opportunity to speak, but in this case I was able to speak about something I was passionate about. Oral presenters were able to meet with the judges afterwards which is invaluable as you receive direct feedback and advice from multiple judges who are invested and have watched your presentation along with having read your paper. This was an amazing experience, going to nationals was even better. The most beneficial aspect of NJSHS is the networking. Networking ties in with being able to speak as without networking how would one put themselves out there and be competitive in the market for jobs? In addition, I and other delegates were given the chance to speak with more subject matter experts, regionals offers this as well with less people per subject matter expert. NJSHS also offers lab tours which introduces many to the inner workings of a lab and its environment. Overall, JSHS as a program is a great opportunity that any student even just thinking about going into research should invest in. It provides experience in networking, speaking, presentation skills, and provides an avenue for students to enhance their knowledge with subject matter experts and can set them down the path to success. JSHS provided me with a valuable opportunity to explore research in high school beyond my expectations. As a second-year oral presenter, I was able to demonstrate my growth from the previous year and connect my interests in computer science with my passion for Spotify. The regional competition brought together like-minded peers from all over Europe who shared the same level of dedication and enthusiasm for research. Attending an in-person event and receiving impressive swag made all the hard work and effort I put into my research worthwhile. While presenting my research to an audience and receiving feedback from judges was a significant source of encouragement for me to continue my work, I must also express my gratitude to my friends, family, and, of course, Mr. Coapstick for their unwavering support.
Being awarded first place for the oral competition and being selected to attend the National JSHS in Norfolk, Virginia was a surprising and memorable experience for me. This was my first time in Virginia after being away from the US for five years, and I had an amazing time exploring what National JSHS and Virginia Beach had to offer alongside the DoDEA Europe delegation, representing Germany. Seeing the exceptional caliber of students from across the US who participated in the event was truly eye-opening. I even had a chance to reconnect with some friends from the DoDEA Pacific delegation and listen to their research projects. Despite the long days filled with catered food and keynote speakers, the event struck a balance found in Visiting the lab tours, walking to Virginia Beach, eating at Joe’s Crab Shack. As both a regional and national presenter, I am grateful for the enriching experience that JSHS offered me. I highly encourage other students to consider submitting to JSHS, a chance that is unique and rewarding opportunity to showcase your research. Katrina, Stuttgart HS |
My research began when our biology teacher, Mrs. Harrington, encouraged us to begin formulating our own research for a competition. This interested me, since I had just finished a course on programming in Unity and was interested in applying it in a project. Over the next few months, I dove into studying UnityML (Unity Machine Learning) and writing a paper for my experimentation. This truly gave me a great new experience on researching something that I am passionate about, and others being interested. I loved the fact that I could perform my own research and knew that I could present my findings to others in the future. This seriously motivated me to apply all my skills and time to this project.
At the regional JSHS, I really enjoyed presenting my research and talking to the judges, who were all well informed. It was a great experience, since they were the first people that I met that could actually understand my research project. They also gave us lots of feedback on our presentations and told us what we did well and what we could improve on. I ended up getting 3rd place, which won me a trip to nationals in Virginia Beach and a scholarship. This really motivated me to further my research. The motivation I gained from regionals helped me study and fully complete a machine learning book during the 2 months before nationals. NJSHS was very fun. It was a great social networking opportunity and allowed me to meet with other high schoolers who were doing similar projects to mine. NJSHS also had great lab tours and guest speakers, who made wonderful presentations about their careers. I am so glad for this opportunity to present my research in a national competition, and all the things I learned on this journey. I recommend it to anyone that is thinking of going into research or having a STEM career. Viktor, Ramstein HS |
As a STEM person doing a humanity topic was frightening to me, however after conduction my project I was able to look at problems from multiple different perspectives. Going through the research process showed me how to overcome obstacles, as well as the values of others' opinions. What I mean by this is that at every step of my project I went to my peers for their opinions. I personally enjoyed regionals better because I received more feedback from both my peers and judges. At regionals I was able to more closely meet with the judges as well as hear from my peers firsthand about their projects. Nationals really opened my eyes to the paid opportunities available to me within the department of defense that are not enlisted positions. I was also able to look at how my peers from around the US and DoDEA Pacific are slowly trying to better the world around them. JSHS taught me that the sky isn’t the limit because there is so much past the sky. Specifically, due to the amount of resources that we were shared I discovered that anything is possible with the proper resources.

I went to JSHS to present my research that I worked hard on and show it to the world, and that’s exactly what I did. I am proud and ready to go again next year. Aside from the long guest speeches and the dining, everything was awesome. I loved the time we got to meet students from all over the world. I’m very glad to have this opportunity.
